lesson'd
I remembered something valuable this weekend. I remembered that printing isn't about records or time trails. It's about temporary tatts, getting dirty and drinking beer. If in the course of that all the posters get done then that's the icing on the proverbial, tattoed, stinky, beer flavored cake.
And in the end our cake was all of that and extra iced. More at papersteak.

like, sixhunnerd
Right now our Papersteak record for most posters printed at once is something like twohundredsixty. This weekend we're gearing up to beat it for Typecon. We're so determined we'll be watching our cartoons with the sound turned off.
Ok not really with the sound turned off, but we ARE determined.

process
Knowing when to say when.. it's more than just a drunk driving campaign slogan, thing.
City of Decatur just held their annual Beerfest logo contest and I was happy to enter. The following pics show my process from initial concept to stuck and finally just plain out of time. Then I did that thing where you give up on the idea and just let things be what they want to be.
Step one: Do some sketches of the basic idea. (A see through guy drinking letters that float in his stomach)

Step two: Make it look not gross.

Step three: Take it to the computer and try to make it cool, then give up.
Check out the winning logo at PaperSteak.

Philo Beddoe
Clint Eastwood and Bruce Ricker produce documentaries about good music. Bruce, has been here at work editing the latest one on Johnny Mercer. Turns out I got to make a postcard to promote it. Is it awesome? Yes, it's the awesomest thing I've ever done cause it has something to do with Clint Eastwood. In fact if a guy who works for Clint asked me to make a number two on my scanner bed that would also be the awesomest number two I'd ever made. All because of the fact that in the math equation: [Clint Eastwood > Everything] the alligator eats Clint Eastwood, thus making him the greatest than everything and you can't argue with math, bitches!!!

gold star
There comes a day in every designers life when they first see something they've worked on out there in the real world. And I don't just mean like that flyer I might have done for the neighborhood 10k, or that one dude's website, but something really out there. Today is my very first day for that feeling. There's been stuff, like a tire ad for BMX magazine that I never saw or whatever, but this... this is really in a store, on a shelf and I'm totally geeking out that fact. Weird thing about where I work is stuff like this takes forever to see the light of day. It's been practically a year since this was on my desk. I'd really forgotten it until my project manager told me she saw it. Then I immediately emailed my mom and behaved like a little pre-madonna artsy brat the rest of the day. And by rest of the day I mean I'm still showing up to work late and acting like answering the phone is beneath me.
I can't wait till the good work hits market...
Until I get the packages properly shot, screengrabs will have to do.

Elf Power
This year for Christmas my wife and I printed on some Ecobags for friends and family. We filled them up with all the little stuff that got us through '08. Things like new music and European kitkats. We also gave a donation to the Atlanta Food Bank on everyone's behalf. If you find yourself looking for a good cause check them out.
Overnight NYC
My new favorite way to see The City; hit the ground running.
Christmas lights plus, Fish's Eddy, then Ingrid at Town Hall, after dinner at
the Mercer Kitchen. Don't forget lotsa mahtzah at 2nd ave. deli, before you go to ABC Homestore! And it's not a trip to NYC if you don't find a new hidden thai place. To top it off, they now have muppets at FAO!. Of course there's more but you get the idea. Next time you see a cheap flight book it.
You won't be sorry.

WARNING: The following video isn't by any means "good". It is however funny. At least I think it's funny. It's my first go at After Effects from back in the Portfolio Center days.

FAIL... SORT OF
Because of the way it came about I called this, "the bad idea". Time was short, all other ideas had been finished and rounded out, and I had a ton of crap going on outside of work. At the presentation though the client really connected with it and it hung in the decision process all the way to the end. Ultimately it wasn't the final choice, but the way it hung on had me rethinking the way I had labeled it. Due to pressing time, fatigue, and distractions I was able to get into a more instinctual creative place and the result was more emotional because of it. I wish I could share more but due to the clients privacy I can only show a rough censored version.

TV Rules!!!
I don't get the whole blow up your TV mentality. I love televisions and I think harming them cause you have no self control is extremist. In fact, I love them so much I made this poster to promote the anti-TV violence movement. Plus, Fidel riding a nuke 'splosion in a pink cowperson hat is just funny stuff.
F**K Cancer
My mom participated in the Breast Cancer 3-Day here in ATL this year and my wife and I got to decorate her. Here's a couple of patches we did:

NASCAR
For Xmas last year all the fellas in the family went to Atlanta Motor Speedway and drove some racecars in the Richard Petty Experience.
If you haven't checked it out I recommend you do, The fumes alone will change your life. I'm not kidding either, to this day I can no longer multiply fractions. It was worth it though. To say thanks my wife and I made her dad this T-shirt which sports the highly unquoted humor of Will Ferrell, starring in Talladaga Nights
